if you have any questions. I look

1. How did the team do this year?
We had a very successful second year. The Boys Team finished 1st at
Districts and 5th at Regionals, while the Girls Team finished 1st
at Districts and 3rd at Regionals.
Moreover, we had 6 boys and 6 girls qualify in individual and relay
events for the State Meet in Austin.
This is quite an accomplishment for such a young team that has only been
together for a year and a half.
2. When does the season begin and end?
The season begins on the first day of school in August and
ends in late February with the State Meet in Austin. We have one of the longest continuous seasons amongst all UIL
sports.
3. Is a tryout necessary to join?
Yes - Tryouts are conducted during the first two weeks of
school at the MISD Natatorium.
4. Are there any specific policies that a student should
know about before signing up for this class?
Yes. As we become
a 5A school in 08-09, it is expected that anyone trying out for the swim team
will already have a competitive swimming background and be proficient in all
four strokes, all turns, streamlines, and starts. Time standards must also be met.
Students who do not demonstrate this proficiency will more than likely
be cut from the team. There are several
summer and year-round programs available to prepare your swimmer for try-outs:
The McKinney Sea Lions, Metro Aquatics in Allen, and City of Plano Swimmers
(COPS). Students interested in swimming
are highly encouraged to sign up and participate with a program in order to
increase their chance of making the team.
Training during the summer, however, does not guarantee anyone a spot on
the team.
5. What time is Varsity and JV practice in 08-09?
All practices are held at the MISD Natatorium at McKinney
High School. Varsity will practice from
5:50 to 7:30 a.m. Junior Varsity
practices during 4th period – we ride the bus over to the pool,
practice for 30 minutes, and return to Boyd before 5th period
begins. JV swimmers must bring their
lunch everyday to eat after practice.
Diving will be during 5th period – divers will take the bus
over during “C” lunch, dive for 30 minutes, and return to Boyd before 6th
period begins. Divers must bring their
lunch to eat on the bus on the way to practice.
6. How will I know if my
child should sign up for JV or Varsity?
All incoming freshmen will
sign up for JV. Swimmers who are ready
to be on the Varsity team will have their schedules changed after the first two
weeks of school, based on the coach’s evaluation of their performance in the
water during the first days of practice.
7.
How big was the team this year?
Varsity had 30 swimmers and 5 divers, while JV had 15
swimmers. The JV team will be smaller
next year, about 10 swimmers.
8.
About how many swim meets are in the regular season? What nights of the week do they occur?
We had 18 competitions during this season, most of which
were dual/tri meets. This also includes
several invitationals. Dual/Tri meets
are usually on Tuesday or Thursday evenings.
Invitationals are on Fridays/Saturdays.
Please see the 07-08 schedule, which will give you a good idea of what
to expect in 08-09.
9.
Will my child get to swim in most meets?
In dual meets, only 3 entries per school are permitted per
event. In tri meets, only two entries
per school are permitted per event.
Invitationals usually limit the number of entries to 4 per school per
event and 2 per school for relays. The
fastest swimmers are selected to compete in the meets. There is no guarantee that your child will
swim in most meets, but everyone will have an opportunity to compete at some
point during the season.
10.
Is there a Booster Club?
Yes, there is. The
Booster Club does a wonderful job of supporting the team throughout the
year. Membership is highly encouraged,
but not mandatory. Dues for the 08-09
school year have yet to be determined.
11.
Anything else?
Yes. I want to
stress to you that academics is the primary focus of our program. Swimmers & divers are expected to pass
their classes at every grade check in order to be eligible to compete for
Boyd. Those who are consistently
ineligible are removed from the team swiftly.
Moreover, it is expected that swimmers & divers will conduct
themselves professionally and appropriately at all times, both in and out of
school. Negative attitude,
inappropriate behavior, and poor decision-making will also result in removal
from the team. Boyd swimmers and divers
must be positive role models for their peers and the community at-large.
GO BRONCOS!!!
